Challenges cloud aviation's carbon credit goals

If phase 1 of the CORSIA scheme succeeds, we could be looking at the most promising hybrid carbon market on a global scale.

In this hybrid market, governance will be compliant under the International Civil Aviation Organization while the participating countries decide on penalties, but the instruments used in the market will be from the current crop of voluntary carbon market credits. 

Hedging season

Looming import fees under Europe’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism have prompted exposed importers to start buying EU Allowances to hedge against the climate tax, industry sources and analysts have told S&P Global Commodity Insights.

The levy on imports of selected carbon-intensive goods – including aluminum, cement, electricity, fertilizers, hydrogen, iron and steel – commences in January 2026.
